China is the world's most populous nation making up one fifth of the worlds population, and one with an economy that is growing at an amazing rate, lifting the Chinese out of poverty. Despite economic reforms and rapid growth, however, China remains a poor nation. In China, as in West Asia, Africa, or Europe, most people have spent most of their time farming for the last ten thousand years. In northern China, people mostly farm wheat, while in southern China it is mostly rice.
